Chinese Cultural Week – Chinese Sichuan Face Changing Opera

 

Objective(s):

1. Get to know about China’s intangible cultural heritage – Sichuan Opera face-changing

2. Enjoy watching Sichuan Opera face-changing

3. Cultivate children’s interest in and appreciation of traditional Chinese art and culture

 

Brief Descriptions:

The face-changing master introduced the history of Sichuan face-changing opera and demonstrated the face-changing to the children, giving them the opportunity to appreciate the face-changing performance up close and deepen their understanding and love of Chinese culture.

 

  

 

 

Name of Activity:

Chinese Cultural Week – Chinese Kung Fu Performance

 

Objective(s):

1. Appreciate and understand Chinese Kung Fu – Wing Chun

2. Enjoy Chinese Kung Fu and experience the fun of sports

 

Brief Descriptions:

Children learnt the basic techniques of Wing Chun by watching the Kung Fu performances of Chinese Kung Fu coach. In addition, the Kung Fu coach also taught some simple Wing Chun techniques with the children, giving them their trial of the fun of Chinese Kung Fu.

 

  

 

 

Name of Activity:

Chinese Cultural Week – Chinese Orchestra Performance

 

Objective(s):

1. Learn about different types of Chinese musical instruments

2. Children enjoy listening to Chinese orchestra music

 

Brief Descriptions:

A professional pipa performer came to school and did the Chinese orchestra to the children. The children listened very attentively and enjoyed the performance, it aroused their interest in Chinese musical instruments. Afterwards, the children were invited to play the pipa themselves so that they could have an understanding of its structure.

 

  

 

 

Name of Activity:

Chinese Cultural Week – Ink Painting

 

Objective(s):

1. Learn about Chinese traditional art – Ink Painting

2. Experience of using the brush and ink to draw pictures

3. Enjoy  doing art and creativity

 

Brief Descriptions:

Tutor and children appreciated the ink painting together, then the tutor introduced its tools and technique, so the children were able to approach and learn more about the Chinese traditional art. During the process, children tried to explore the brush and ink, used to draw different patterns to make their own Chinese ink painting.

Chinese Cultural Week – Shadow Puppet Show

 

Objective(s):

1. Let children get to know Chinese tradition art – Shadow Puppet Show

2. Cultivate children’s interest in and appreciation of traditional Chinese art and culture

 

Brief Descriptions:

The school invited a shadow puppet performance team to perform a shadow puppetry and a string puppet show in a lively and interesting way. Afterwards, the shadow puppet master also invited the children to try operating the shadow puppets themselves and experience the fun of shadow puppetry.

 

  

 

 

Name of Activity:

Chinese Cultural Week – Fan Painting

Objective(s):

1. Learn about Chinese traditional art – Fan Painting

2. Experience of using a rubbing technique to create pictures on fans

 

Brief Descriptions:

The tutor introduced the history of fan painting to the children, and then invited the children to use rubbing templates to rub the patterns on the fans. Some children also created freely and drew unique patterns on the fans, to experience the fun of creating fan paintings.

Chinese Cultural Week – Tie-Dye Art and Craft

 

Objective(s):

1. Learn about Chinese traditional art – Tie-Dye

2. Experience of using the technique of tie-dye to make art and craft

3. Cultivate children’s interest in Chinese traditional art

 

Brief Descriptions:

Children were very eager to the Tie-Die activity, they tried to use different colours to dye on their art craft through the Tie-Dye activity, their art craft showed their creativity and their unique patterns.

 

  

 

 

Name of Activity:

Chinese Cultural Week – Facial Mask

 

Objective(s):

1. Understand the origin and culture of Peking Opera facial mask

2. Children can freely create and design their own facial mask

3. Children can develop interest in Chinese culture

 

Brief Descriptions:

The tutor introduced the history of facial mask to the children, as well as how the colours represented different personalities and emotions. Then the children tried to use water paint and brush to draw their facial mask, so that each facial mask were different and distinctive. This experience allows the children to feel the cultural characteristics of Chinese facial mask.

 

  

 

 

Name of Activity:

Chinese Cultural Week – Chinese Juggling Performance

 

Objective(s):

1. Get to know Chinese traditional Juggling Performance

2. Experience the fun of juggling and enhance children’s interest in Chinese culture

 

Brief Descriptions:

The school invited a professional juggler to introduce different types of acrobatics, such as octagonal scarves, plate spinning, diabolos and balancing skills, and the children appreciated Chinese folk performing arts very much. Children also tried to participate in different acrobatic events and experience the fun of juggling.

 

  

 

 

Name of Activity:

Chinese Cultural Week – Flour Doll Making

 

Objective(s):

1. Learn about China’s traditional art by making flour dolls

2. Appreciate the “flour doll” works and cultivate children’s interest in Chinese culture and art

 

Brief Descriptions:

The tutor introduced the history of “flour dolls” and the methods / techniques of making “flour dolls” to the children. Then the children tried to make “flour dolls” themselves and created unique flour dolls from the dough. Children could experience the essence and fun of traditional Chinese art through this activity.
